In early 2026, a story broke that should have been front-page news for weeks. Former OpenAI employees came forward with claims that internal teams were routinely reviewing private ChatGPT conversations. Not for safety. Not for moderation. For business intelligence.
The allegation was straightforward: employees at OpenAI were mining user chats to identify promising startup ideas, product concepts, and market opportunities. People were brainstorming with ChatGPT the same way they would brainstorm with a trusted colleague, pouring out unfiltered business plans, product strategies, and competitive analyses. The Pattern Is Everywhere
OpenAI is not unique. This pattern repeats across the entire tech industry:
- Zoom updated its terms of service in 2023 to claim the right to use meeting content for AI training, then walked it back after backlash.
- Amazon Alexa recordings were reviewed by human contractors who listened to private conversations in homes, including sensitive moments.
- Google employees were caught listening to Google Assistant recordings, including bedroom conversations and domestic disputes.
- Microsoft contractors listened to Skype calls and Cortana commands, despite the company's public claims about privacy.
Every single one of these companies told users their data was "private" or "anonymized." Every single one of them was caught with humans reviewing that data.
Speech Is Especially Vulnerable
Text is revealing. But speech is something else entirely. Your voice carries tone, emotion, hesitation, and context that text never captures. - Prefer local over cloud. For anything sensitive, choose tools that run entirely on your machine. If a tool requires an internet connection to function, ask yourself why.
- Read the source code. Open-source software lets you verify privacy claims instead of trusting marketing copy. If a company says "we do not collect your data" but will not show you the code, that should tell you everything.
- Treat speech like a password. Your unfiltered thoughts are more valuable than your login credentials. Protect them accordingly.
